Casey at Ravelry Spills Pattern Sales Stats

Casey stopped by the Designers forum on Ravelry to drop some stats bombs about pattern sales. The data set has certain limitations (explained in his post) but the overall stats are fascinating.

My back of the envelope calculations using the numbers Casey provided

Casey even went so far as to further break down the stats into average price per unit per category per year (so much per!). The stats are available on the original thread but there are some interesting things to note:

  • There was a decent jump in average pattern price from 2013 to 2014, but not much movement from 2014 to 2015
  • Sweaters dominate the sales charts both in volume and in price per unit, although in 2015 they lost a little bit of market share
  • Home goods saw a huge jump this year, selling almost 64,000 more patterns than in 2014.  Meanwhile Fingerless Gloves, Gloves, and Mittens all took significant hits

This sort of information is very useful to designers who are planning their designs for the upcoming year and it’s great that this information has been made available, limited though it may be in scope (promotional activity throws a lot off so there are about $3 million in missing sales this year that were left out of the report).
